Direct sales (like Avon, Mary Kay) offer recession-proof jobs

Not long ago, Craig Lapp made his living driving a truck that helped carve Southern California’s soil into new developments. But then housing sales slumped, and in November 2007 Lapp’s construction company let him go.
While he searched for another job, Lapp began working alongside his wife, Lynne, in a business based in their Temecula home, selling nutritional supplements made by the direct-sales company Isagenix. Nearly two years later and with no construction job in sight, Lapp says a one-time sideline has become the couple’s bread and butter.
“It’s paying our mortgage, our car payments … putting food on the table,” says Lapp, 55, who adds that he and his wife are earning a six-figure income. “It was our ‘Plan B’ that turned into our ‘Plan A.’ ”
Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation’s unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.
“We’re recession-resistant in the sense that more people come to us during economic hard times for supplemental income or replacement of a lost job.”
— Neil Offen, president of the Direct Selling Association.
While 2008 industry figures aren’t yet available, “Anecdotally we’re hearing that recruitment is up and … unfortunately as the unemployment rate rises to 10% or higher, we’ll be picking up more people who need an income-earning opportunity.”
The recession has become a recruiting tool. An Avon (AVP) cosmetics representative declares in TV ads that…
“I can’t get laid off. It’s my business.”
Companies such as Isagenix, a marketer of weight-management and nutritional supplements and snacks, and jewelry maker Silpada Designs are coaching their representatives to spread the word that direct selling can keep you afloat in the faltering economy.
“Right now, our direct-selling opportunity is really the No. 1 product that we have to sell,”
— Geralyn Breig, president of Avon North America.
With that in mind, Avon this year launched its most ambitious recruitment campaign and saw its U.S. sales force grow to more than 680,000 through March, its largest ever, Breig says.
The same month, cosmetics company Mary Kay began airing its first TV ad for new representatives. In its first three days, visitors seeking information about becoming “beauty consultants” at MaryKay.com spiked 108%.
Silpada Designs, a Lenexa, Kan.-based company specializing in sterling silver jewelry, says its sales force in the U.S. and Canada was up 11.8% on May 1 from a year earlier. And Chandler, Ariz.-based Isagenix says its sales force was up 30% in March from a year before.
Direct selling is a fluid industry, with only 10% of representatives working “full time,” or at least 30 hours a week. Many work only long enough to meet short-term goals, such as holiday presents.

Is Network Marketing a Scam or a Scheme?
We originally posted this back on December 8 and just realized we’d made a mistake and had it set to “Private,” so… nobody could see it. Duh <smile>. We’re re-posting it here & now.
There’s a huge difference between Network Marketing and pyramid schemes. Here’s the truth.
By Michael L. Sheffield
____________________
Question: Some friends continue to try to recruit me into Network Marketing deals that seem like some type of money game or pyramid. Other friends tell me they’re illegal and I’ll get into trouble. How do I know what’s legal and legitimate?
Answer: To help you understand what Network Marketing is, I must first explain what it isn’t.
Network Marketing isn’t a pyramid scheme.
Pyramids are programs similar to chain letters where people just invest money based on the promise that other people will put in money that will filtrate back to them and somehow, they’ll get rich. A pyramid is strictly a money game and has no basis in real commerce. Normally, there’s no product involved at all, just money changing hands. Modern-day pyramids may have a product, but it’s clearly there just to disguise the money game.
Network Marketing is a legitimate business. First, it’s based on providing people with real, legitimate products they need and want at a fair price. While some people do buy cheap Motrin online make a lot of money through Network Marketing, their financial benefit is always the result of their own dedicated efforts in building an organization that sells real products and services.
Pyramids are illegal and are based on taking advantage of people. For a person to actually make money in a pyramid scheme, someone else has to lose money. But in Network Marketing, each person can multiply his or her efforts, skills and talents by helping others be successful.
Network Marketing has proved itself as part of the new economy and a preferred way to do business here and around the world.
Network Marketing isn’t about taking advantage of your friends and relatives.
Only a few years ago, Network Marketing meant retailing to, and sponsoring people from, your “warm list” of prospects. Although sharing the products or services and the opportunity with people you know is still the basic foundation of the business, today we see more people using sophisticated marketing techniques such as the Internet, conference calling and other long-distance sponsoring techniques to extend their network across the country and around the world.
Network Marketing isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme.
Of course some people do make large amounts of money very quickly. Many would say those people are lucky. But success in Networking isn’t based on luck. (Unfortunately, money won’t sprout wings and fly into your bank account no matter what someone has promised you.) Success in Network Marketing is based on following some very basic yet dynamic principles.
Now, let’s discuss what network marketing is.
Network Marketing is a serious business for serious people.
It’s a proven system where the design, creation and expense the corporate team has gone through becomes a road map for your own success. Just follow the simple, proven and duplicable system that the good companies provide.
The real key is this: Network Marketing is all about leverage.
You can leverage your time and increase the number of hours of work effort on which you can be paid by sponsoring other people and earning a small income on their efforts. Andrew Carnegie, who created one of the world’s greatest fortunes, said “I would rather make 1 percent on the efforts of 100 people than 100 percent on my own efforts.” This very basic concept is the cornerstone of Network Marketing.
For example, most successful people building a Network Marketing business do so in an organized method. They work a few dedicated hours each week, with each hour of effort serving as a building block for their long-term business growth. Then they sponsor other people and teach those people how to sell the company product and sponsor others who duplicate the process.
By helping the people you personally sponsor to sponsor others, you duplicate yourself. As this process continues, you create compound growth that can lead to hundreds or even thousands of people coming into your business. You leverage your time by helping others be successful and earn an income from all their efforts.
Network Marketing, has no big capital requirements, no geographical limitations, no minimum quotas required and no special education or skills needed.
Network Marketing is a low-overhead, home-based business that can actually offer many of the tax advantages associated with owning your own business.
Network Marketing is a people-to-people business that can significantly expand your circle of friends. It’s a business that enables you to travel and have fun as well as enjoy the lifestyle that extra income can provide.

The Challenge of Turning 65
Increased life expectancy, decreased pensions and Social Security benefits add to the challenge.
In the January-February AARP buy cheap Motilium online Bulletin, CEO A. Barry Rand, wrote his Where We Stand column about “Facing the Challenge of Turning 65.” In the piece Rand pointed out that the first of the 78 million Baby Boomers began turning 65 on January 1, 2011 and they will adding another 65 year old to their numbers every eight seconds— more than 10,000 every day— for the next 18 years. By the time the last of the Boomers turns 65 in 2029, the 65+ population of the United States will have doubled what it is today.
“Add to that,” Rand wrote, “the fact that people turning 65 today can expect to live another 18 to 20 years, and the implications are staggering.”
Although as he points out, Boomers are generally optimistic about their future and “see their best years ahead of them,” millions of Americans are struggling. The first boomers are reaching 65 at a time when:
• their retirement savings have been decimated by the Great Recession;
• their pensions are vanishing;
• the value of their homes has decreased substantially;
• workers are still losing their jobs, and finding new work is a struggle;
• health care costs are rising and more doctors are refusing to see Medicare patients because of an unstable and flawed payment system; and
• the president’s fiscal commission is proposing to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — and shift more of the costs to people 65-plus — when they need it most.

Finding a Job – Finding a Life
Six unemployed residents of St. Louis have vastly different backgrounds. But they all share one goal:
Finding a job.
In St. Louis, the labor market and unemployment rate are very similar to the rest of the nation. NPR begins a year-long journey, following these residents in their quest for work.
Nationwide, there are more than 14 million people out of work, and most economists say it will be years before the country returns to full employment. In terms of the labor market and the unemployment rate, St. Louis, Mo., is very similar to rest of the nation.

These are good people. Smart people. Hard working people. They deserve a chance. Please… how can I let them know about the possibility to get their lives back with Network Marketing?”

“Network Marketing is a critically important way of helping people…” – Senator Orrin Hatch

Network Marketing Gives You Significant Tax Advantages – Robert Kiyosaki
Redo, reiterate, renew, repeat, replay, replicate, reprise, rebroadcast, rerun, recycle. All to say that until the business beginning of January (the 3rd) will be reposting some of our best to date. Hope you enjoy our vacation <smile>.
Excerpted from Robert Kiyosaki’s terrific book, The Business of the 21st Century.
Tax Advantages— and the Lesson They Teach
People who are brand-new to Network Marketing are often quite surprised to learn about the significant tax advantages from having your own home-based business.
Most people have at least a vague idea that the rich enjoy all sorts of tax advantages that they themselves do not, but since they have lived their entire lives in the E [Employee] quadrant, they typically have no concept of what those advantages are or how they actually work. Therefore, people are often shocked to realize that they, too, can enjoy those very same tax advantages and put significant amounts of money in their pockets from the very first day of their new business.
With recent changes in tax policies and more insurance programs tailored for small businesses and the self-employed, it’s easier than ever before to create your own benefits package that rivals and even surpasses anything the standard big corporations could offer.
By starting a Network Marketing business in your spare time and keeping your regular job, you begin to get the tax advantages of the rich.
A person with a part-time [home] business can take can take more tax deductions than employees do.
____________________
And those deductions Robert is speaking about are not a few dollars here & there. They ARE significant. For most home-based business owners— even working part-time, they amount to a number of thousands of dollars (think $5000 or more). And that’s immediate money, not something you have to wait for.
There has never been a more important time to learn about and be open to the possibilities of Direct Sales MLM Network Marketing. It is The NEW American Dream.

The No. 1 Reason Americans Want to Work For Themselves
Redo, reiterate, renew, repeat, replay, replicate, reprise, rebroadcast, rerun, recycle. All to say that until the business beginning of January (the 3rd) will be reposting some of our best to date. Hope you enjoy our vacation <smile>.
Excerpted from Robert Kiyosaki’s book, The Business of the 21st Century.
Now that layoffs are rampant and everyone is worried about what the future holds, millions of people are soberly reevaluating their finances and realizing that if they want to have a secure future they can count on, they’re going to have to come up with a Plan B. People today are hungrier than ever to earn extra money, and because of that, they are more receptive and more inclined to open their minds to new avenues.
In fact, this was true even before recent economic meltdown. Ever since the 80′s, and especially since the turn of the century, the drive to control our own economic futures has been building. Here’s what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said in 2007 report titled Work, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America: “Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses.
72 percent of all adult Americans would rather work for themselves than for a job, and 67 percent think about quitting their jobs “regularly” or “constantly.”
Now, I’m no economist, but I know someone who is: Paul Zane Pilzer.

Paul is a wiz kid, was Citibank’s youngest-ever vice president, and left the banking world to make millions going into business for himself. He’s had a few New York Times best-sellers, predicted the Savings & Loan crisis before it happened, and served as an economic advisor to two presidential administrations. He’s someone worth listening to.
Paul talks about a 180-degree shift in cultural values around the nature of career paths, with the conventional corporate-employee career structure giving way to the entrepreneurial path.
“The traditional wisdom in the second half of the 20th century,” says Paul, “was to go to school, get a good education, and go to work for a large company. The idea of going into business for yourself was most often regarded as risky. Admirable perhaps, but risky … and maybe a little crazy. Today it’s completely the other way around.
Paul’s right. That U.S. Chamber of Commerce report I mentioned also refers to a Gallup poll finding that 61 percent of Americans say they would prefer to be their own boss. Another poll, this one by the Fresno research firm Decipher, found that 72 percent of all adult Americans would rather work for themselves than for a job, and 67 percent think about quitting teir jobs “regularly” or “constantly.”
And it’s not just about making a living: it’s also about the quality of how we’re living.
People are waking up to the fact that they want more control over their lives. They want to be more connected to their families, be in charge of their own time, work from their homes, determine their own destinies.
In that Dicipher study, 84 percent of the respondents said they woud be more passionate about their work if they owned their own business. The No. 1 reason they gave for wanting to work for themselves?
“To be more passionate about my work life.”
What’s happening is that the 20th-century myth of job security, with it’s promise that the path to a long, happy fulfilling life is to find a job working for someone else is crumbling before our eyes.

Public Jobs Drop Amid Slowdown in Private Hiring
The following excerpts were taken from an article published back on October 8, 2010 in The New York Times. Click the title link to read the entire article online at NYTimes.com.
Public Jobs Drop Amid Slowdown in Private Hiring
By Catherine Rampell
Published: October 8, 2010
In the one-two punch long feared by many economists, hiring by businesses has slowed while government jobs are disappearing at a record pace.
Companies added just 64,000 jobs last month, a slowdown from 93,000 jobs in August and 117,000 in July, the Labor Department reported Friday. But over all, the economy lost 95,000 non-farm jobs in September, the result of a 159,000 decline in government jobs at all levels. Local governments in particular cut workers at the fastest rate in almost 30 years.
“We need to wake up to the fact that the end of the stimulus has really hit hard on local governments,” said Andrew Stettner, deputy director of the National Employment Law Project. “There is much more of a slide in the job market than what we really need to clearly turn around.”
With the waning of the $787 billion Recovery Act passed in 2009 and credited with increasing employment by millions of jobs, finding new policies potent enough to speed up the recovery has proved difficult.
… Friday’s jobs report led to discouraging forecasts for the rest of the year, given the slowdown in both job and output growth in recent months. Private payrolls have been growing throughout this year, but at a rate too sluggish even to keep up with people entering the work force, much less make a dent in the numbers of unemployed. The nation’s unemployment rate stayed flat in September, at 9.6 percent.
Of particular concern is the fact that the length of the workweek has barely budged in six months and the number of people working part time because they cannot find full-time work continues to climb…
______________________________
And true to the predictions above, the employment picture has indeed worsened as the country moves to the end of this upside (and mostly) down (economically speaking) year.
There has never been a better nor more important time to take a sincere & serious look at a part-time career in Network Marketing. This is The NEW American Dream

Yesterday’s Headline: Retirement accounts have lost $2 trillion — So far!
More & more, the issue of “Retirement” is increasing in importance for a growing number of Americans. Clearly, with the Baby Boomers in their 50′s and 60′s that’s to be expected. But in today’s unsettling economic times, retirement has a new urgency. Unlike even a major purchase of a car or a house, which can take years of planning, retirement requires a lifetime .
Here’s a piece written by business expert and Network Marketing million-dollar-income-earner, Rod Nichols. Trust it serves. (And btw, that $2 trillion figure is two years old. Imagine how much bigger that number is today…)

Yesterday’s Headline: Retirement accounts have lost $2 trillion — So far!
by Rod Nichols
Are you relying on the 401k, retirement account, or Social Security to take care of you in your old age? Forget about it! Take control of your financial future with a Network Marketing business.
First, Network Marketing businesses are a lot more fun than just sticking money into an account.
Second, Network Marketing businesses have a much greater potential for return.
Third, Network Marketing businesses give you the opportunity to help others too.
Fourth, Network Marketing businesses provide you with much better tax benefits.
Fifth, Network Marketing businesses create opportunities for your to travel and meet new people.
There are five great reasons to utilize a Network Marketing business to secure your retirement.
Let me tell you a sad story.
A number of years ago I met a man who had worked for the same company for 30 years and socked away a large sum of money into the company retirement account. He was 2 years away from retirement when the company went bankrupt. He lost everything and was devastated. “What could I do in 2 years that would enable me to recreate my retirement fund,” he asked me and I told him there was only one thing – Network Marketing. I then helped him research the industry to find the right company for him and 2 years later he had built a business that generated far more than his retirement account would have.
Think about it this way.
If you have a Network Marketing business that generates a $100,000 a year income, you have the equivalent of $1,000,000 in an investment that yields 10%.
How long would it take you to accumulate $1,000,000 doing what you are doing now?
Whereas there are many people who work part-time and within 2 to 5 years have a Network Marketing business that generates a residual income of $100,000 or more (much more). Beyond the financial side, a successful Network Marketing business will give you free time to enjoy life, opportunities to travel and make new friends, lot’s of cool contests and awards, and amazing tax benefits.
So, if you have a Network Marketing business, get busy and secure your financial future. If you don’t, start looking today.

Getting Free. The Promise of Network Marketing with Randy Gage
Back on November 17th, we published a blog post by Network Marketing leader, trainer & million-dollar annual income earner Randy Gage titled Don’t You Dare Give Up!. (If you missed it, click the link to go right there.) Here we go again. We simply found “Getting Free” to be such great advice about Network Marketing and such a great look at the possibilities of this business for you, we were compelled to publish it here. Enjoy it.
Getting Free
By Randy Gage
November 30th, 2010

One of the most important things we do in Network Marketing is helping people get free. They break away from the bonds of office politics, nepotism, rush hour traffic, and someone controlling a very large percentage of their waking hours.
We can offer them an environment based on empowering people. Becoming successful by helping offers reach success. Getting free by helping others get free. But this is also the area that hurts the most people in our business…
So I’m writing a lengthy post about the subject and I’m asking you to make sure everyone on your team reads this today.
The biggest mistake I see in the business is people leaving their jobs too soon. As soon as someone equals their job income, they want to leave it. But that’s a mistake. This forces them to live out of their MLM business, instead of using their income to grow their business. And when you have to sponsor someone just to meet bills, that creates stress and a very negative energy.
Better you keep your job and work even more evenings a week. Sacrifice for a season to grow the business and pay off your bills. The best scenario is for you to be debt free, extra money in the bank, and earning even more from your MLM business than your job. Only then is it time to quit the job.
So here’s my advice:
Write your resignation letter NOW.
Then put it in your wallet or purse. Read it every morning. Read it when you’re having a hard time at work. Read it when you get home from a meeting at 1 am and have to get up at 6 am for work the next day. Let it drive you. Then one day soon, you’ll be able to hand it in.
Dear (insert cheap boss name here),
As I’m sure you know, there have been turbulent changes in the economy and this has affected us all. In response to these factors, our family has been forced to make some restructuring changes and some positions have been eliminated. One of those positions is mine.
I can no longer afford to work here. And because of the difficult economic times, I am opening up the position for someone that doesn’t have a dream. It’s time for me to leave, so I can live mine.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
Please really do write your resignation letter today and let it pull you toward freedom. And encourage your people to do the same. But counsel with them and let’s not have anyone leave their job until the time is right for them. Then we really are helping people get free.

Network Marketing Gives You Significant Tax Advantages – Robert Kiyosaki
