Direct sales (like Avon, Mary Kay) offer recession-proof jobs – USA Today

Direct sales (like Avon, Mary Kay) offer recession-proof jobs
Updated 5/15/2009 1:30 PM |
By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY

_________________________

Not long ago, Craig Lapp made his living driving a truck that helped carve Southern California’s soil into new developments. But then housing sales slumped, and in November 2007 Lapp’s construction company let him go.

While he searched for another job, Lapp began working alongside his wife, Lynne, in a business based in their Temecula home, selling nutritional supplements made by the direct-sales company Isagenix. Nearly two years later and with no construction job in sight, Lapp says a one-time sideline has become the couple’s bread and butter.

“It’s paying our mortgage, our car payments … putting food on the table,” says Lapp, 55, who adds that he and his wife are earning a six-figure income. “It was our ‘Plan B’ that turned into our ‘Plan A.’ ”

Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation’s unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.

“We’re recession-resistant in the sense that more people come to us during economic hard times for supplemental income or replacement of a lost job.”
— Neil Offen, president of the Direct Selling Association.

While 2008 industry figures aren’t yet available, “Anecdotally we’re hearing that recruitment is up and … unfortunately as the unemployment rate rises to 10% or higher, we’ll be picking up more people who need an income-earning opportunity.”

The recession has become a recruiting tool. An Avon (AVP) cosmetics representative declares in TV ads that…

“I can’t get laid off. It’s my business.”

Companies such as Isagenix, a marketer of weight-management and nutritional supplements and snacks, and jewelry maker Silpada Designs are coaching their representatives to spread the word that direct selling can keep you afloat in the faltering economy.

“Right now, our direct-selling opportunity is really the No. 1 product that we have to sell,”
— Geralyn Breig, president of Avon North America.

With that in mind, Avon this year launched its most ambitious recruitment campaign and saw its U.S. sales force grow to more than 680,000 through March, its largest ever, Breig says.

The same month, cosmetics company Mary Kay began airing its first TV ad for new representatives. In its first three days, visitors seeking information about becoming “beauty consultants” at MaryKay.com spiked 108%.

Silpada Designs, a Lenexa, Kan.-based company specializing in sterling silver jewelry, says its sales force in the U.S. and Canada was up 11.8% on May 1 from a year earlier. And Chandler, Ariz.-based Isagenix says its sales force was up 30% in March from a year before.

Direct selling is a fluid industry, with only 10% of representatives working “full time,” or at least 30 hours a week. Many work only long enough to meet short-term goals, such as holiday presents.

Become a Network Marketing Pro. Solution for the Jobs Crisis.

Millions of jobs lost, many may never return.
Even as the economy recovers, more people could face years out of work

Back a bit, Eric Worre, creator and star of NetworkMarketingPro.com, did this video below titled: Become a Network Marketing Pro. Solution for the Jobs Crisis.

Eric referenced a piece on MSNBC.com titled: Millions of jobs lost, many may never return. by Christopher S. Rugaber of The Associated PressHere’s the beginning of the article with a link to the complete piece.

WASHINGTON — Fewer construction workers will be needed. Don’t expect as many interior designers or advertising copywriters, either. Retailers will get by with leaner staffs.

The economy is strengthening. But millions of jobs lost in the recession could be gone for good.

And unlike in past recessions, jobs in the beleaguered manufacturing sector aren’t the only ones likely lost forever. What sets the Great Recession apart is the variety of jobs that may not return.

That helps explain why economists think it will take at least five years for the economy to regain the 8.2 million jobs wiped out by the recession — longer than in any other recovery since World War II.

It means that even as the economy strengthens, more Americans could face years out of work. Already, the percentage of the labor force unemployed for six months or longer is 4.3 percent. That’s the highest rate on records dating to 1948.

Finding a Job – Finding a Life

Six unemployed residents of St. Louis have vastly different backgrounds. But they all share one goal:

Finding a job.

In St. Louis, the labor market and unemployment rate are very similar to the rest of the nation. NPR begins a year-long journey, following these residents in their quest for work.

Nationwide, there are more than 14 million people out of work, and most economists say it will be years before the country returns to full employment. In terms of the labor market and the unemployment rate, St. Louis, Mo., is very similar to rest of the nation.

These are good people. Smart people. Hard working people. They deserve a chance. Please… how can I let them know about the possibility to get their lives back with Network Marketing?”

Where are the jobs?

A recent piece on YahooNews by Associated Press Business Writer Pallavi Gogoi, asked, “Where are the jobs?” and answered, “For many companies, overseas.” (Click the title link to read the entire story. Here’s an excerpt.)

Corporate profits are up. Stock prices are up. So why isn’t anyone hiring?

Actually, many American companies are — just maybe not in your town. They’re hiring overseas, where sales are surging and the pipeline of orders is fat.

More than half of the 15,000 people that Caterpillar Inc. has hired this year were outside the U.S. UPS is also hiring at a faster clip overseas. For both companies, sales in international markets are growing at least twice as fast as domestically.

The trend helps explain why unemployment remains high in the United States, edging up to 9.8 percent last month, even though companies are performing well: All but 4 percent of the top 500 U.S. corporations reported profits this year, and the stock market is close to its highest point since the 2008 financial meltdown.

But the jobs are going elsewhere. The Economic Policy Institute, a Washington think tank, says American companies have created 1.4 million jobs overseas this year, compared with less than 1 million in the U.S. The additional 1.4 million jobs would have lowered the U.S. unemployment rate to 8.9 percent, says Robert Scott, the institute’s senior international economist…

The No. 1 Reason Americans Want to Work For Themselves

Redo, reiterate, renew, repeat, replay, replicate, reprise, rebroadcast, rerun, recycle. All to say that until the business beginning of January (the 3rd) will be reposting some of our best to date. Hope you enjoy our vacation <smile>.

Excerpted from Robert Kiyosaki’s book, The Business of the 21st Century.

Now that layoffs are rampant and everyone is worried about what the future holds, millions of people are soberly reevaluating their finances and realizing that if they want to have a secure future they can count on, they’re going to have to come up with a Plan B. People today are hungrier than ever to earn extra money, and because of that, they are more receptive and more inclined to open their minds to new avenues.

In fact, this was true even before recent economic meltdown. Ever since the 80′s, and especially since the turn of the century, the drive to control our own economic futures has been building. Here’s what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said in 2007 report titled Work, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America: “Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses.

72 percent of all adult Americans would rather work for themselves than for a job, and 67 percent think about quitting their jobs “regularly” or “constantly.”

Now, I’m no economist, but I know someone who is: Paul Zane Pilzer.

Paul is a wiz kid, was Citibank’s youngest-ever vice president, and left the banking world to make millions going into business for himself. He’s had a few New York Times best-sellers, predicted the Savings & Loan crisis before it happened, and served as an economic advisor to two presidential administrations. He’s someone worth listening to.

Paul talks about a 180-degree shift in cultural values around the nature of career paths, with the conventional corporate-employee career structure giving way to the entrepreneurial path.

“The traditional wisdom in the second half of the 20th century,” says Paul, “was to go to school, get a good education, and go to work for a large company. The idea of going into business for yourself was most often regarded as risky. Admirable perhaps, but risky … and maybe a little crazy. Today it’s completely the other way around.

Paul’s right. That U.S. Chamber of Commerce report I mentioned also refers to a Gallup poll finding that 61 percent of Americans say they would prefer to be their own boss. Another poll, this one by the Fresno research firm Decipher, found that 72 percent of all adult Americans would rather work for themselves than for a job, and 67 percent think about quitting teir jobs “regularly” or “constantly.”

And it’s not just about making a living: it’s also about the quality of how we’re living.

People are waking up to the fact that they want more control over their lives. They want to be more connected to their families, be in charge of their own time, work from their homes, determine their own destinies.

In that Dicipher study, 84 percent of the respondents said they woud be more passionate about their work if they owned their own business. The No. 1 reason they gave for wanting to work for themselves?

“To be more passionate about my work life.”

What’s happening is that the 20th-century myth of job security, with it’s promise that the path to a long, happy fulfilling life is to find a job working for someone else is crumbling before our eyes.

The Best Business Keeps Getting Better – Richard Brooke

“(MLM) is the best-kept secret in the business world.”
— Fortune magazine

“Dollar for dollar, (MLM) is the best investment I’ve ever made.”
— Warren Buffet

It’s a grim economic picture these days. Businesses are downsizing, going virtual or going offshore and taking our jobs with them. That’s bad news. Making matters worse, the recession that is gripping our economy — while showing some signs of recovery — has hit many of us hard. The unemployment rate is hovering around 10 percent, a 26-year high. And there is a widening gap between the richest and poorest Americans as these rippling job layoffs ravage household budgets.

Not everybody is struggling. Many of us who have pursued Network Marketing have gone from relying on an employer to pay us and take care of our security, to us “getting it” that we are our only security.

What was once considered risky— starting your own business— is rapidly becoming known as the smartest way to reduce taxes, increase your income, build net worth and create free time.

So just how promising is Network Marketing? Could it be the answer to the financial security you’re looking for? And just as important, is this industry tested and proven?

To answer these questions, I’ve included a link to an educational and eye-opening video I recently recorded called The Four Year Career. It takes a good, hard look at this 60-year-old industry from an insider’s perspective as I explain the proven merits of the Network Marketing and how it can truly offer a viable solution to a lifetime of financial security.

I encourage you to take a few minutes and watch The Four Year Career because the truth is, for most of us, the traditional business approach is out of reach.

Why? Hundreds of thousands in start-up capital— all at risk and far more than a full-time effort with competitors around every corner. There are no solid mentors and no life beyond the business.

Network Marketing provides an alternative for those serious about their net worth and their freedom.

In his best-selling book, The Automatic Millionaire, David Bach says, “the beauty of this industry is that it’s all done for you. The only thing you need to do is find a reputable company — one that you trust, that offers a product or service you believe in and can get passionate about.”

Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad says, “you’re actually building an income-generating asset. Direct selling gives people the opportunity, with very low risk and very low financial commitment, to build their own income-generating asset and acquire great wealth.”

And what once may have been looked down upon as a peddler’s opportunity is now seen far differently by those that should know. In the past few years alone, Network Marketing has been showcased in Forbes, Fortune, USA Today, US News and World Report and the Wall Street Journal.

“The best-kept secret of the business world.” That’s how an article in Fortune magazine described Network Marketing in August 2004.

In 2002, Warren Buffet got many people’s attention when Berkshire Hathaway purchased a major Direct Sales company.

Buffet now owns three Direct Sales companies and has said, “dollar for dollar, it’s the best investment I’ve ever made.”

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Records and a host of other Virgin companies, founded Virgin Cosmetics in the UK — a Direct Sales company. The list of major MLM investors reads like a who’s who: Bertelsmann, The Body Shop, Crayola, Hallmark Cards, Jockey, Nestle, Remington Industries, Sara Lee, Unilever and Time Warner.

In his most recent book, The Next Millionaires, Paul Zane Pilzer forecasts 10 million new millionaires in the U.S. over the next 10 years, and predicts many of them will be people who are getting involved in their own Network Marketing business now.

Network Marketing has grown every year for the past 20, jumping over 91 percent in just the past 10 years. Today, more than 40 million of us enjoy annual sales of $30 billion in the U.S. and $100 billion worldwide.

Every week, an average of 175,000 new people in the U.S., and an additional 300,000 worldwide, get their starter kit, learn their products and start offering their opportunity to others. Some will persevere with a personal vision of fun, health and abundance and go on to live extraordinary lives. Others will not harness this personal power and will move on. Either way, the opportunity to be part of a great movement in our country and the world is available to all of us.

We cannot deny that we are smack-dab in the middle of the opportunity to change our lives and the lives of our families for generations to come. Not just with the wealth we can create, but with the wisdom to live lives worthy of such abundance. What we do with it today, tomorrow and every day is entirely up to us. As good ol’ Henry Ford said profoundly: “If we think we can, we will. If we think we can’t, we won’t.”

It does not take a Ph.D to figure out how things won’t work for you. Actually, any idiot can decide that fate. It takes vision, courage and creativity to figure out every day how it will work for you.

Make it happen for yourself. Do it ANYWAY!

Richard B. Brooke

This Blue Christmas Economy: Hoping for the best, bracing for the worst

BLUE CHRISTMAS FOR FLEDGLING ECONOMIC RECOVERY
By Irwin Kellner, of MarketWatch

____________________

Unemployment is up, employment is stagnant, taxes may rise and 2 million people are about to lose their jobless benefits — so what is there to be merry about?

There’s no place like home for the holidays. And that’s where many shoppers are remaining, much to the consternation of the nation’s retailers.

The way things are going in Washington these days, merchants are hoping for the best but bracing themselves for nothing more than a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings. After all, how can you expect people to spurge if they are concerned about jobs, unemployment benefits and taxes?

Especially worried are those retailers that ordered lots of holiday goodies, thinking that the worst was over and that the economy was picking up. In a narrow sense, it is — at least according to the umpire of the business cycle. But out there in the real world, most people think that we are still in a recession.

You can’t blame them.

The jobless rate rose to 9.8% in November, the highest rate since last April, at a time when it should have been falling.

To make matters worse, private-sector payrolls rose a paltry 50,000 last month — 40,000 of which were temporary workers.

This does not do much for people’s confidence. Those few who did find work in November are obviously worried that it may not last. And then there are the 15 million who are out of work, among them 6.3 million who have been jobless for 26 weeks or longer…

Public Jobs Drop Amid Slowdown in Private Hiring

The following excerpts were taken from an article published back on October 8, 2010 in The New York Times. Click the title link to read the entire article online at NYTimes.com.

Public Jobs Drop Amid Slowdown in Private Hiring
By Catherine Rampell
Published: October 8, 2010

In the one-two punch long feared by many economists, hiring by businesses has slowed while government jobs are disappearing at a record pace.

Companies added just 64,000 jobs last month, a slowdown from 93,000 jobs in August and 117,000 in July, the Labor Department reported Friday. But over all, the economy lost 95,000 non-farm jobs in September, the result of a 159,000 decline in government jobs at all levels. Local governments in particular cut workers at the fastest rate in almost 30 years.

“We need to wake up to the fact that the end of the stimulus has really hit hard on local governments,” said Andrew Stettner, deputy director of the National Employment Law Project. “There is much more of a slide in the job market than what we really need to clearly turn around.”

With the waning of the $787 billion Recovery Act passed in 2009 and credited with increasing employment by millions of jobs, finding new policies potent enough to speed up the recovery has proved difficult.

… Friday’s jobs report led to discouraging forecasts for the rest of the year, given the slowdown in both job and output growth in recent months. Private payrolls have been growing throughout this year, but at a rate too sluggish even to keep up with people entering the work force, much less make a dent in the numbers of unemployed. The nation’s unemployment rate stayed flat in September, at 9.6 percent.

Of particular concern is the fact that the length of the workweek has barely budged in six months and the number of people working part time because they cannot find full-time work continues to climb…

And true to the predictions above,  the employment picture has indeed worsened as the country moves to the end of this upside (and mostly) down (economically speaking) year.

There has never been a better nor more important time to take a sincere & serious look at a part-time career in Network Marketing. This is The NEW American Dream

Restructuring the American Dream

From The Opinion Pages of The New York Times, November 19, 2010, Hiding From Reality, Op-Ed Columnist Bob Herbert wrote:

________________________

However you want to define the American dream, there is not much of it that’s left anymore.

Wherever you choose to look— at the economy and jobs, the public schools, the budget deficits, the nonstop warfare overseas— you’ll see a country in sad shape.

Standards of living are declining, and American parents increasingly believe that their children will inherit a very bad deal.

We’re in denial about the extent of the rot in the system, and the effort that would be required to turn things around. It will likely take many years, perhaps a decade or more, to get employment back to a level at which one could fairly say the economy is thriving.

…The human suffering in the years required to recover from the recession will continue to be immense. And that suffering will only be made worse if the nation embarks on a misguided crash program of deficit reduction that in the short term will undermine any recovery, and in the long term will make true deficit reduction that much harder to achieve.

The wreckage from the recession and the nation’s mindlessly destructive policies in the years leading up to the recession is all around us. We still don’t have the money to pay for the wars that we insist on fighting year after year. We have neither the will nor the common sense to either raise taxes to pay for the wars, or stop fighting them…

America will never get its act together until we recognize how much trouble we’re really in, and how much effort and shared sacrifice is needed to stop the decline. Only then will we be able to begin resuscitating the dream.

Jobs – The Good News Is… Still Bad News

“Finally,” Rex Nutting of MarketWatch.com wrote on Friday (11.05), “the economy is starting to deliver some good news. Not great news, but good.” But by the time he reaches the end of his peace, Mr. Nutty declares, “It’s not enough…” and “…this economy and this nation are still struggling.”

The economy added 151,000 non-farm jobs in October, handily beating estimates. But the unemployment rate remained at 9.6% as many people began to look for work again.

As welcome as this news is, it’s not enough. The population is still growing faster than the number of jobs. The unemployment rate was steady at 9.6% in October only because the labor pool shrank by more than a quarter million people.

The participation rate — the percentage of adults who are working or looking for work — fell to 64.5%, the lowest in 26 years.

The number of people who are too discouraged about their job prospects to even look rose to the highest on record.

All in all, the payrolls report was encouraging news, especially for those who got one of those 151,000 jobs. But this economy and this nation are still struggling.
